Step-Parent Adoption

Step-parent adoption is a process by which a spouse of a biological parent may obtain rights to parent a child as if the child was his or her own biological parent. If a step-parent is legally able to adopt a child they will have the same parenting rights to a minor child as the biological parent including a duty to financially support the minor child. A step parent adoption can only be granted if one biological parent has either consented to the adoption or has had their parenting rights terminated. A step-parent must be married to the biological parent for at least one year for an adoption to be approved by the Court.
